Black is how I perceive silence –devoid of colour. The colour black represented the act of mourning because it symbolizes the absence of light and in turn, life. Through exploration of my own situation as a widow, my conclusions are that the silence that comes with widowhood is a pervasive silence that surrounds oneself and others. Text is a central feature of my work that developed into keeping a book, my ‘Moan Book’. My book is based upon the silence that I cannot share with others. I recorded my thoughts for one year. To keep its privacy, extracts from the book have been coded in the form of Sound-bites and recreated into screen-prints. Everything is cloaked, whether it is in a locked cabinet, a nailed down book or a monologue of my sound-bites.
