A scarecrow, although a protector is essentially isolated within its own landscape. Inspired by photographers such as Sally Mann and Ralph Eugene Meatyard whose main focus is the family album, my current practice centres on my own dysfunctional family unit. As a divorced, single parent my approach is psycho-biographical, dealing with time, memory, absence and the ability to move on. Two major influences in my life, my great great grandmother Ann Llewellyn and grandmother Gwyneth Griffiths have also been single women by default – 1 through abandonment, the other bereavement, yet both achieved a level of greatness in their lives within their own respective isolated landscapes, there is, therefore also an aspect of homage to the survival of strong, autonomous women. This body of work responds to questions over the validity of single parent families and is, moreover a celebration of competence and evidence that failure is not inherent in divorce.
